We are honored and grateful to celebrate all the ways our community learned and grew over the last year. Thank you to each of our donors and partners for making 2022-23 a great one!
In many ways, the last year at Hill Learning Center felt like turning over a new leaf. It was refreshing to emerge from the pandemic dominating so much of our time and energy. We focused on supporting our students, families, peer educators, and partners and building community in person as much as possible.
We worked to live into our commitments to Furthering Access by increasing financial aid awarded across all student programs, including supporting the highest number of school financial aid recipients in Hill’s history! Generous leadership gifts to the Wendy B. Speir Student Financial Aid Fund and contributions to financial aid endowments, along with a record-breaking $115,000 in Hill Mile sponsorships and donations, are driving the continued growth in financial aid awarded each year. Hill School also supported student-led affinity groups in leading the way in our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts and above all helped students learn in ways that meet their needs.
Reaching beyond our walls, Hill developed new tutoring and professional development partnerships with local schools and districts – work made possible by committed community donors. We sold HillRAP, our reading methodology, to a mission-aligned national company that is committed to both taking this unique program to scale AND working with Hill to ensure that we and our local partners continue to benefit from it. And we released an updated science of reading course that enrolled 4,250 educators worldwide.
And yet, through continued change and evolution, the people at the core of our organization – our students and teachers, our peer educators, our families, employees, donors, volunteers, and partners – remain the consistent heart of Hill. Please make sure to read all the way to the bottom of this report to honor our annual award winners, celebrate the retirement and benevolence of one of our most beloved teachers, and memorialize the passing of two cherished members of our community.
Hill truly has much to celebrate as we look back on 2022-23. We are especially grateful for the incredible generosity of our philanthropic partners and are proud to honor your commitment to our students, educators, and community. On behalf of everyone at Hill, we hope seeing what you’ve made possible inspires you!

Thank you to the many individual, corporate, and foundation contributors who fueled learning, innovation, and expanded access.
*Two significant one-time events in 2022-23 yielded additional revenues of $5.4 million. Research Triangle Institute (RTI) generously gave Hill a portion of a shared endowment established by Hill’s founder George Watts Hill, increasing Hill’s permanent endowment by $1.5 million. Endowment funds support many aspects of Hill’s operating budget, reducing the pressure on tuition and fees to cover all costs. The sale of HillRAP to 95 Percent Group generated $3.9 million in one-time gains and transition services revenues. Hill’s Board has dedicated the proceeds to cover outstanding bond debt and fund essential capital reserves for an aging facility as well as critical financial aid reserves as we grow our financial aid budget.
Hill’s vision is that ALL students with learning differences and attention challenges receive the instruction and support they need – regardless of where they attend school or whether they have a formal diagnosis. We pursue this vision through a range of programs and partnerships in support of students, families, and educators. Thank you to all our partners and supporters who made learning happen for so many in 2022-23!
Hill’s campus was bustling all year with 860 students attending School, Summer, and Tutoring programs. We also expanded tutoring in local schools and piloted an executive function program at the Boys & Girls Club of Durham and Orange Counties.
Emerging from pandemic disruptions renewed our focus on supporting students: integrating new math resources, expanding our guidance counseling support and advisory programming, and sustaining student-led affinity groups. We were honored to host special guests like the Poetry Fox and Blackspace to infuse learning with joy and connections across the community. We also expanded our tutoring classes and operated another full summer program.
Philanthropic support also helped us partner to reach more local students through the Boys & Girls Club and Students to Scholars and placing Hill reading tutors in Durham public schools, including E.K. Powe, Fayetteville Street Elementary, KIPP Durham, and Maureen Joy Charter School.
Thanks to generous contributions to the Hill Fund and the Durham Opportunities Fund, Hill continues to invest in program innovations and improvements to create optimal learning environments, expand our impact, and meet the individual needs of every single student we serve.
"Alfonso is growing as a student, person, and reader thanks to Hill! I am so humbled and thankful for my Hill Family!"
Tashawna Turner, Current Hill School parent
"Our partnership with Hill Learning Center has been instrumental in empowering students with the necessary tools and skills to excel academically. Hill's dedication to fostering a nurturing learning environment has allowed the students to improve their academic performance and develop the confidence and self-belief needed to reach their full potential."
Dramaine Freeman, former Executive Director, Students to Scholars
Families of students with learning differences and attention challenges face unique challenges. In all that we do, Hill strives to provide families with a community of support and to make Hill programs as accessible and welcoming as possible.
In 2022-23, Hill continued offering a free, public Community Education Series to provide families and educators with practical resources and information grounded in research about learning and attention challenges. For Hill School families, we also strengthened connections and support through a Welcoming Committee, a Fall Family Social, parent coffees with a range of topics and formats, a monthly counseling newsletter, and the first in-person Grandfriends Day since 2019. Additionally, we redesigned our progress reports to be more family-friendly and prepared to implement new benchmark assessments that will provide families with greater clarity and insight into their children’s progress.
Philanthropy enabled Hill to host community-building events for school families, reach 2,100 people worldwide through our Community Education Series, and begin developing a new family-friendly course on understanding learning differences.
Thanks to the generosity of several alumni families and the success of our annual Hill Mile fundraiser that this year generated $115,000 from 269 contributors and sponsors, we’ve grown our financial aid budget by 150% over the last five years. We saw the impact of our financial aid growth in 2022-23.
51 students received aid, the highest number of financial aid recipients in Hill's history!
We were also able to provide more aid for the families who needed it most. A record 21 families received awards of $10,000 or greater.
The average Hill cost for families receiving financial aid was less than $10k, and 10 families attended Hill for $550 thanks to significant financial aid packages and state education grants.
Thank you to all the families and friends who have made leadership gifts to support financial aid, contributed to our Hill Mile campaign, and sponsored Hill Mile to make Hill School more affordable for so many students and families. See our 2023 Hill Mile Sponsors here.
All educators – Hill’s teachers and tutors and those beyond our walls – deserve access to research-based tools and training. Gifts to Hill sent our faculty and staff to attend and present at national conferences, engaged content experts in Hill professional learning, supported improved data collection and analysis, deepened collaboration with school districts, and ensured teachers within and beyond Hill received individualized coaching and mentorship.
In 2022-23, 950 teachers participated in Hill trainings in reading, writing, executive function, and math, while more than 4,250 educators worldwide enrolled in our self-paced, online Science of Reading Short Course. Our team also led Science of Reading Professional Learning Communities for educators in partner schools and programs – communities facilitated by reading experts to help participants reflect on and apply the content in their own classrooms.
We trained 353 new teachers in the Hill Reading Achievement Program (HillRAP) and supported HillRAP implementation across 534 schools in 37 NC counties and 8 states – ensuring this proven reading intervention reached thousands of students who need it.
Thanks to our donors, teachers participating in Hill’s programs receive high-quality, research-based training and support that helps them best serve students at Hill and in classrooms around the country.
"You have been amazing to work with and have given me advice I have used not just in my HillRAP lessons, but in the general ed classroom as well."
Amber Page, 2nd Grade Teacher
"One takeaway from your workshop that I’ve seen in action is teachers feeling more confident to incorporate some form of multisensory learning into their lessons. These small changes have certainly had a big impact in classrooms. We look forward to a continued partnership with you.”
Crystal Bozeman, Middle School Learning Specialist
The Hill Reading Achievement Program (HillRAP) is a structured literacy program developed by teachers at Hill Learning Center over four decades. Due to the proven success of the methodology, HillRAP attracted the attention of 95 Percent Group, a national company committed to ensuring 95 percent of students in our country learn to read at or above grade level. In January 2023, Hill announced the sale of HillRAP to 95 Percent Group.
95 Percent Group has the resources and expertise to expand HillRAP to more schools and students while investing in research and technology to make HillRAP even better. This will allow HillRAP to flourish nationally while Hill focuses on deepening local impact. Hill will continue to use HillRAP in our Student Programs and with select partner schools and districts in North Carolina and nationwide.
Read The Rise of HillRAP and the Realization of a Dream to learn more about this incredible testament to the power and potential of the Hill reading methodology developed by Hill’s amazing educators and staff, in collaboration with countless partners, supporters, and HillRAP teachers far and wide. None of this story would have been possible without the incredible generosity of so many foundations and major donors over many years, and we and all who have benefitted – and will do so in the future – are beyond grateful.
Hill was able to invest in our people, complete important system upgrades, and plan for our future from a position of strength thanks to a combination of earned revenue and the incredible generosity of our donors.
Your gifts to Hill collectively raised nearly $1.8 million in annual and multi-year contributions and commitments for general operations, expanding partnerships, furthering access and financial aid, and endowments.
Donor support helped us recruit and retain amazing faculty and staff, including by investing in increased compensation and creating a new Director of Diversity, Equity & Engagement position.
We worked hard to upgrade our systems and spaces to best meet student, family, and educator needs, including by migrating to a more family-friendly financial aid system and converting a workroom into a classroom to create additional learning space.
HillRAP’s sale generated invaluable financial resources while ensuring Hill’s ability to benefit from future improvements. Hill’s Board has dedicated the proceeds to cover outstanding bond debt and fund essential capital reserves for an aging facility as well as critical financial aid reserves as we grow our financial aid budget.
Philanthropy has helped build our strong foundation and fuel the heart of Hill and will play a critical role in charting our path forward to deeper local impact and continued expanded access for students, families, and educators.
This award celebrates a volunteer whose efforts will have had a lasting and profound impact on Hill Learning Center, its students, and teachers. In May 2023, we are honored to recognize Mike Giarla. Mike has served on Hill’s Finance Committee, Investment Committee, and Board of Directors since 2016, and his strategic leadership in each of these roles has led to Hill developing a clearer, stronger, and more equitable financial model. Thanks to Mike’s business acumen, ability to nurture relationships, commitment to financial aid, and willingness to ask challenging questions, Hill is in a strong financial position as we look to the future.
The Sharon P. Maskel Methodology Award is given each year to a peer-nominated recipient who demonstrates commitment to developing, improving, and spreading the Hill Methodology. Sandy Silverman, our 2023 recipient, is a veteran math teacher whose creativity, compassion, and communication skills ensure students in her classroom fully grasp complex concepts and build confidence in their knowledge. A peer described her approach to teaching as “never giving up on our students, but being willing to give up on a way of teaching that isn’t working for that student.” Hill is honored to recognize Sandy’s accomplishments!
Last year saw the retirement of one of our most beloved community members. Anita Shore has been a valued and respected teacher, mentor, colleague, and friend for over 40 years. Thousands of students, families, colleagues, and HillRAP teachers far and wide have benefitted from her wisdom, dedication, brilliance as a teacher, and generosity. As we celebrate her retirement from our faculty, we are humbled and thrilled that Anita will continue sharing her love and support for students with learning differences as a tutor and a donor. Having seen the transformative impact of a Hill education on so many students, she has pledged personal support annually to Hill financial aid for lower school students in need. In true Anita fashion, she has pledged this support in honor of her colleagues, Hill faculty and staff. Hill extends an exuberant thank you to Anita for ALL she has given – and continues to give – in so many ways! Please see the Honor Roll for contributions made in Anita’s honor.
We dedicate this annual report to the loving memories of Susan Williams Moore and Julia Johnson Baker.
Alumni parent and longtime trustee, Susan Moore described herself as Hill’s biggest cheerleader. She made a great sacrifice in moving with her young boys to Chapel Hill to give her son Will the opportunity to attend Hill for four years.
Susan shared her Hill story with anyone who would listen, introduced Hill to her communities, and helped spearhead Hill’s longstanding partnership with Edgecombe County Public Schools.
Susan was a passionate mother, champion, advocate, and friend who did so much for others and radiated laughter, joy, and love wherever she went.
Julia Baker was a dedicated Hill parent for more than five years, supporting her son Stephen even as she battled cancer.
Julia lived life always seeing the glass half full and shared that spirit and positivity with all who met her, including the faculty, staff, and families at Hill. Julia had a lifelong love for those with mental and/or physical differences and respected the dignity of every human being.
Julia was courageous, generous, and kind and cared deeply for Hill, our mission, and our community.
Hill offers sincere gratitude to the many friends and family members whose generosity in Susan’s and Julia’s memories will help ensure Hill School is accessible to students and families in need of financial assistance.
